Precise measurement technology for various applications
Our systems are specially designed to meet the requirements of scientific aerosol research. They provide high-resolution data on particle sizes, distributions, and concentrations – essential for a deep understanding of aerosol processes in the laboratory and in the field. Typical areas of application:
- Atmospheric research – Investigation of the formation of new particles, growth processes, and their role in cloud formation and climate systems.
- Laboratory-based fundamental research – Analysis of the physical and chemical properties of particles under controlled conditions.
- Nanoparticle characterization – Measurement of the size and number of ultrafine particles, e.g., for nucleation and cluster formation studies.
- Comparison and validation measurements – Calibration and evaluation of other measurement methods or simulation models.
- Field studies in complex environments – Use of mobile systems for real-time measurement of natural and anthropogenic aerosols.
How nanoparticle measurement works
Our video explains step by step the measuring principle of the SMPS+C scanning mobility particle sizer – from sampling and electrical classification to particle counting. Discover how state-of-the-art technology makes the smallest particles visible.

Successful cooperations with science and research
GRIMM AEROSOL TECHNIK works closely with leading research institutes and scientific institutions to advance aerosol science. Here is a selection of our projects:
- Sonnblick Observatory / ACTRIS Research Network: At the Sonnblick Observatory at an altitude of 3,106 meters, the GRIMM CPC 5421 continuously measures aerosols in alpine air and provides valuable data for climate research, cloud formation, and international measurement networks such as ACTRIS.
Learn more - Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS): On board the research vessel METEOR, our AirQualifier EDM 264 aerosol spectrometer provides precise real-time data on particle sizes, dust masses, and weather parameters – even under extreme conditions on the high seas.
Learn more - Purdue University Indiana: As part of the zEDGE‑iRACE (zero Energy Design Guidance for Engineers-indoor Radical and Aerosol Chemistry Experiment) campaign, our mobile PSMPS system recorded ultrafine particles during everyday activities in a tiny house – and gained new insights into sources and pollution of indoor air.
Learn more - Max Planck Institute for Meteorology / Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique: During the EUREC4A campaign off Barbados, GRIMM aerosol measurement devices provided data on cloud formation and atmospheric processes in the tropics.
Learn more - University of Innsbruck: As part of the “Citizen Science” project “Atemluft” (Breathing Air) of the Institute for Ion Physics and Applied Physics at the University of Innsbruck, schoolchildren mapped ultra-fine particle pollution on their way to school with the support of GRIMM AEROSOL TECHNIK, thus combining science, education, and environmental awareness.

GRIMM 5416High-end condensation particle counter
Precise nanoparticle counting instrument with the option to operate as a fully-equipped SMPS system.

MiniWRAS 1371Portable wide-range aerosol spectrometer
The only portable instrument on the market that allows simultaneous and precise real-time monitoring of both micron-sized and nanoparticles. Designed for indoor air quality monitoring.

PSMPSNano mobility particle size spectrometer
The PSMPS is a mobility particle size spectrometer with a 2-stage condensation particle counter detection system for delving into the sub-2-nm size range. It combines a Grimm SMPS+C system with the Airmodus Particle Size Magnifier (PSM).

SMPS+CScanning mobility particle sizer
Scanning mobility particle sizer with condensation particle counter. This is a versatile all-in-one solution for precise nanoparticle counting and sizing and can be combined with a GRIMM dust monitor in order to create a wide-range aerosol spectrometer. Also available as 19-inch variant.

SMPS+EScanning mobility particle sizer
Scanning mobility particle sizer with Faraday cup electrometer. This is an all-in-one system for particle size distribution and can also be used as referencing instrument for calibration of nanoparticle counters since it is optimized to reduce the effects of mechanical shocks and pressure differences.
Accessories

GRIMM 5483Flow splitter
For splitting an aerosol flow four ways in order to provide the same aerosol number concentration to up to four measuring instruments.

GRIMM 5520ADBD aerosol neutralizer
The alternative to established systems: it does not require the use of radioactive radiation and can therefore be operated without a special handling licence.

GRIMM 5522-A241Am aerosol neutralizer
This aerosol neutralizer works based on the radioactive decay of 241Am (nominal activity 3.7 MBq). It is optimized for direct connection to GRIMM DMAs and compatible with GRIMM SMPS+C and SMPS+E systems.
